The perils of poor humidification!

It was pretty mild the other evening, and I was in need of some forced contemplation. So I started a fire in our
patio fireplace, grabbed a Fonseca, and enjoyed some deep thought.

But not for long. That cigar burned so hot I had a hard time enjoying it. I smoked about an inch of it and then decided to save my taste buds for another day.

You see my humidor suffered my neglect for a while, and while the reletivw humidity never got be low 50%, even the 50′s are way too low. I’ve got it back up to 65 now, but clearly it takes a while for the cigars to adjust.

Lesson learned!

Back where I started

It was just about exactly one year ago when some friends of mine, at a conference  down at Disney in Orlando, handed me a Fonseca over drinks out on the patio. So tonight I decided that I’d take a trip down memory lane and smoke a Fonseca – one of the originals from the box of Fonsecas they sent me after I’d gotten home. It was that box that got me started in cigars.

I’ve been accumulating a lot of cutoffs and scrap in my workshop, so I took one of the tubs full of scrap wood and fired up my outdoor fireplace, and experienced two kinds of smoke – one enjoyable, one not so much. I was amazed at the memories that popped into focus as I puffed away. They say that smell is the sense that has the strongest connection to memory and I believe it. I remembered sitting on the porch in a warm summer rain, sitting outside Disney’s convention center talking about various things, and the taste of the Bushmills I was drinking at the time. I remembered the feeling as I opened that package with the first box, feeling like I was opening pornography or something. A good kind of bad ;-)

Anyway, it burned perfectly despite a recent surge in humidity in my humidor and very poor lighting on my part. It started very uneven, and soon evened out to a perfect burn. Taste was as a remember – mild but satisfying, if a bit sensitive to over-pulling.

It was a shame they were only 5-50, and not larger. Tonight would have been the night to smoke a 9-60 if they made such a beast.

Three days, three cigars

I spent Saturday building a fence with and old friend, and it was a very hard day’s labor. We got all of the posts in place, and called it quits. After a little barbeque we settled in for some cigars.

First was a Punch, double corona. These had been splitting on me in the past, but they’ve finally dried out enough to be perfectly smokable.

Second were Fonseca Robusto, which was significantly milder than the Punch. These were really just filling in a little time – we were sitting in the driveway admiring our handiwork along with glasses of Bushmills, but they were very enjoyable all the same.

Last came Montecristo #3, which was the best of the bunch. I taste much more spice than in the previous cigars. Even my friend commented that it was very good.

It was a very late night, but very enjoyable.

It all begins…

Today I received a package in the mail. It was a box of Fonseca 5-50 cigars. This is the same brand and size that a friend recently offered me during a recent outing. I Actually enjoyed it, so to help bring me into the fold he sent me a whole box of the suckers!

They are mild, but good. I looked it up online and they go for about $90/box of 24 so this was a pretty generous gift! I think I will try to keep up here with all the different cigars that I end up trying, along with my thoughts and reflections on each. I’m a newbie, so at this point phrases like “subtle hints of coffee overtones with a muse of chocolate overall” are just fiction – my first impression is it tastes kind of smokey ;-) But I will try to learn.

Stay tuned!
