Gotta love those Perdomos!

My wife and I went for a walk with the kids the other night. it was the best sort of summer evening. Warm, breezy, and early enough in the season that bugs are just starting to exist again but aren’t much of a bother.

When she asked if I wanted to go, I almost said no, but then I realized it was a perfect cigar smoking opportunity. The breeze would keep smoke at bay, and for whatever reason walking enhances my enjoyment of a great cigar.

I hustled to my humidor, and picked out the shortest stick I had – a Perdomo. I believe it is what they call a Phatom size in their Estate Seleccion Vintage 1991 series.

All I can say is YUM! that sucker was awesome! I’m a bit predisposed to like cigars that are shaped like me – that is, short and fat – but this ‘gar burned like a champ, with very tasty and plentiful smoke. It didn’t get bitter or wood-smokey near the end. In fact it’s about the only cigar I’ve smoked yet where I could have burned my fingers if I’d been just a little distracted.

Going to have to find more of these guys…my usual vendor of great cigars cheap doesn’t seem to have them.

My First Home-built Humidor

As I wrote earlier (meaning like a year ago ;-), once I’d been gifted a box of Fonsecas, I had to find someplace to put them. When you combine that with some upcoming woodworking projects for my daughter, I had a great excuse and a great practice project rolled into one. I built this humidor back in June of last year and photographed it as soon as I filled it. I’ve been meaning to put up pictures of it ever since. These are not so great, but I know if I wait until I have a chance to take better ones it’ll be another year.

I made it out of maple and cherry, with a spanish cedar interior. I finger jointed the corners, and it ended up pretty bomb-proof. What it needs is a good couple of coats of varnish over the thin oil coat I gave it to make it nice and tight as far as humidity goes. It’s a bit leaky right now.

Where To Smoke In New York City?

I’m going to a conference in New York City in late April, and I’ll be meeting up with the folks who got me into cigars while I’m there. What’s got us stumped is that they’ve outlawed smoking in all public places apparently, so where does one go to smoke cigars? I’m assuming that there are still places to smoke, right?

Anybody have suggestions?

The first cigar of the season

There is nothing like a warm, relaxing night to sit on the porch and smoke a good cigar. Tonight was nothing like a warm night to sit on the porch ;-)

As I mentioned last time I had gotten some cigars from www.texcigars.com – a supplier of cheap cigars online – to bring in the new season. I kept waiting for a nice, warm (ok, above 50 degree) evening to smoke one. Tonight I finally decided that the warm weather wasn’t coming until I brought it here, so I went out and did my part to bring in Spring.

I chose a Baccarat, 6×50, and it turned out to be a pretty good choice. My first impression was that it was very sweet – actually the wrapper is sweetened it seems. Kind of like smoking a Twinkie, only without the thick clouds of black, toxic smoke you’d no doubt get if you smoked a Twinkie. Instead it was mild, sharpening just a tad about an inch in, and gradually getting just slightly peppery near the end. I didn’t smoke the whole thing. Once both butt cheeks got down to the 35 degree ambient temperature I called it quits. But it was enjoyable. 35 degrees is an excellent temperature to drink light beer.

The Baccarat is not quite as smooth as a Fonseca, but a pretty good smoke all the same. Given the price, it’s a lot closer to a reasonable daily cigar than Fonseca as well.

Why no ladies smoking cigars?

It does seem obvious, but I can really see both sides: Why are there no ladies smoking cigars, let alone beautiful women smoking cigars?

Sure, cigars are very male and it’s obvious that women see them as filthy and disgusting. When and old friend was over and we were sharing a few cigars, I asked him if his wife (who smokes cigarettes) would smoke cigars. He instantly said no, no way, wasn’t going to happen because cigars are “nasty.” Hardly surprising.

But, that’s what makes it surprising. These days women seem to leaping at the chance to do everything men do often for little more reason than men do it. I could easily see women taking up cigar smoking simply because it’s there and men do it. Given how many women smoke, it’s kind a surprising more of them aren’t into cigars.

Now, I don’t mean for this to become a plea for women to start smoking…just one of those odd thoughts that passes through from time to time.
